These are the three goals men most often choose for their first serious climb. None of them involves technical mountaineering, but all three take you to altitudes where your body works at its limit. Here is how they differ.
| Elbrus | Kilimanjaro | Everest Base Camp | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altitude | 5,642 m | 5,895 m | 5,364 m; Kala Patthar 5,644 m |
| Days | 8–10 | 7–8 | 12–14 |
| Season | June–September | January–March, June–October | March–May, October–November |
| Main challenge | Cold, wind, snow, crampons | The night summit push | Many days at altitude |
| Price | 650–1,300 USD | 1,600–2,600 USD | 1,200–1,800 USD |
Elbrus
Europe’s highest point is a twin-peaked volcano in the Caucasus, in southern Russia. The classic route is from the south: cable car, snowcats, mountain huts. Technically it’s not difficult, but the weather can turn within an hour, and the summit is freezing and windy even in summer. You need crampons, an ice axe and self-arrest skills, which are taught on the acclimatization outings.
Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest point is a trek that needs no mountaineering gear. The Machame route over 7–8 days gives good acclimatization. The summit push starts around midnight: 6–8 hours of climbing in the cold, the hardest day of the trek.
Everest Base Camp
Not a climb but a trek through Nepal, past Sherpa villages, monasteries and the moraines of the Khumbu Glacier. A flight to Lukla, 8–9 days up with acclimatization days, 3–4 days down. The effort is moderate, but you spend many days above 4,000 m.
Which to choose first
- Short on time: Kilimanjaro. One week, and the biggest payoff for your time.
- Want to build skills: Elbrus. Snow, crampons, a real mountain.
- Want a journey: Everest Base Camp. Two weeks in the Himalayas.
Preparing after 35
- Starting three months out: cardio three or four times a week, such as running, cycling or stair climbing with a backpack.
- Weekend hikes with an 8–10 kg pack.
- A check-up: ECG, stress test and blood work, especially after 40.
- Insurance that covers altitude: many policies cap coverage at 3,000 or 4,000 m.
- Broken-in boots and tested clothing: don’t buy anything new right before you go.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need mountaineering experience?
For Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp, no: you need good endurance. For Elbrus, hiking experience helps; using crampons and an ice axe is taught on site.
What are my chances of reaching the summit?
On Kilimanjaro, on routes with good acclimatization, they are high. On Elbrus, a lot depends on the weather on summit day, so we build in a reserve day.
How much does the whole trip cost?
On top of the program price, add flights, gear (rental or purchase), insurance and tips for the guides. The concierge will work out the total for your dates.
